Now here's a somewhat unexpected treat. Yet another offshoot of Fat White Family, Insecure Men a band led by former lead guitarist Saul Adamszewski and school friend Ben Romans-Hopcraft of Childhood and their self-titled debut record. Unexpected, in that unlike his former band it's an approachable pop record of the indie persuasion, albeit one that tackles slightly unsettling and leftfield lyrical themes.
The Guardian's Alex Petridis has made it his Record of the Week and he generally knows something about these things. So, you get tuneful melodies about drugs, addiction, Heathrow Airport, Penge, Cliff and general dysfunctionalism, dressed up in Glam, Exotica and Pop trappings, making good use of the evident influence of Go-Kart Mozart and Television Personalities' Dan Treacy. It's all less consciously designed for shock factor than Fat White Family records customarily are and betrays an altogether welcome sensitivity and bruised hurt in addition to considerable songwriting craft . It's all incredibly English. And I like it.
