As we swing into December and the final half of this particular countdown, here's a fabulous, inventive box of tricks. Xenia Rubinos' album Black Terry Cat sounded great over my headphones yesterday, played in juxtaposition with mid-nineties Bristol Trip Hop landmarks from Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky. Not on the surface that it's that similar in tone. Just that like those wonderful records from twenty years or so back though, it takes what it needs in order to formulate the sound it wants to make. Incredibly diverse. There's jazz, soul, gospel, R&B, hip hop, pop, rock and pretty much anything else that takes her fancy. You never know quite what's coming next.
