The Heart of Rock and Soul # 759 The Melodians

'The Melodians aren't singing about Hebrews enslaved in Babylon; their gorgeous harmonizing and light but deep rhythms instead spell out why Rastafarians, who conceive themselves exiled from a paradisical Africa to a hostile Babylon that encompasses the rest of the world, learned to sing - because the 'wicked (who) carried us away captivity ? Require from us a song.' Singing against their wills, then, the slaves handed down a tradition in which their descendants now revel, while vowing never to let the memory of that enslavement dwindle. With songs this sinuous and compelling to carry it on, it never will.'
