'Not just the smartest synth-pop riff: the smartest synth-pop song too. Annie Lennox doesn't seem to have intended it that way. Sweet Dreams is in fact a pointed critique of the commodity culture of late twentieth century capitalism, a description of its processes and seductions. That's not why it was a hit - it was a hit because Dave Stewart found a great riff and then rode it into the ground - but it's why the record outlasted its moment on the charts.'
