A strange one this one. Not truly a lost band member as he was on the R.E.M. drum-stool for seventeen years but something was undoubtedly lost after he left them following a near-fatal brain aneurysm while on tour in Europe in 1996. Odd, as he always appeared on surface the lesser of the four, but clearly made a contribution to the whole that the band struggled in vain to recapture following his departure. Michael Stipe always loved his eyebrows, they featured on the sleeve of Lifes Rich Pageant and his backing vocals and solid, unflashy drumming soundtracked the days of my youth, when they were absolutely the band for me.
