Born in Congo in 1978, Baloji moved to Ostend, Belgium when he was three and his music is a fascinating fusion of the influences of his native continent and his adopted one. Wonderfully showcased on his new record 137 Avenue Kaniama, (released on Bella Union), a brilliantly shifting coat of many colours moving from Afrobeat and Soul, to Rap and Ragga and wherever else his muse takes him, the album is pure spiritual joy.
