I'm still not entirely sure what I think about Pavement. But this hits the spot. Partly I think because they chose to use New Order rather than The Fall as their role models here and it suited them better. With regards to this line, somehow, you get the impression that the members of Pavement always had success behind them to fall back on if things hadn't worked out with the band. That doesn't take away anything from this. One of their finest early moments.
