1. Pulp - 1995.
2. The Pogues - 1997
# 1 Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind
3. The Stranglers - 1982
# 1 The Jam - Town Called Malice (a pretty good One and Two)
4. Laurie Anderson - 1981
Might have been the most remarkable Number 1 ever. In fact it was pipped by It's My Party and then Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.
5. M - 1979
Art Garfunkel - Bright Eyes
6. Elvis Costello & the Attractions - 1979
Tragedy - The Bee Gees (quite!).
7. Sparks - 1974
The Rubettes
8. The Hollies - 1974
Paper Lace
9. David Bowie - 1973
Little Jimmy Osmond (the cruellest cut of all)
10. T. Rex - 1971
Clive Dunn - Grandad
So injustice heading back to 1971. Some people mention Ultravox's Vienna being kept off Number 1 by Joe Dolce's Shaddapa Your Face in a similar light. They're wrong. Shaddapa Your Face was a better song and the fact that Vienna didn't make it to Number 1 was clearly a cause for celebration.
