Song of the Day # 96 - The Smiths

'Boot the grime of the world in the crotch dear'

Thought about posting 96 Tears here but that can wait for another time. A late and lesser appreciated Smiths 45 instead. This almost seems designed as a throwaway. To show how easily The Smiths could do it by now. A readymade, and a tribute to the 7 inch single. Of course it didn't appear on a studio album. Singles that sound like this aren't meant to.  Reached # 10 in the UK. Candy Darling on the sleeve. Another classic Morrissey cover star. The song itself is a homage to Shelagh Delaney, author of A Taste of Honey, one of the key Smiths texts. It ticks all the Smiths boxes. It's pure Glam, paying respect / filching lyrically from Bowie's Kooks and Alice Cooper's School's Out. Marr went glam too. His arrangement by turns Mick Ronson, T.Rex and Mott.

'In my mind I was going for a Mott the Hoople sound. But it ended up like Mott the Hoople as performed by the Salvation Army. Which is very Smiths. So I suppose it was a success in our own weird way but it's not one of my favourites.'

'Throw your homework onto the fire...'

I think it's great. It shows the rest how it can and should be done. Still.
