250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 159 Syd Barrett - Syd Barrett

Sometimes it's a good idea to sit down and listen to recirds you may have bought some time ago, you can't really remember when but you probably haven't actually listened to that often. Such is the case with Syd Barrett's  Syd Barrett which I'm listening to now.

It's an autumnal record. Melancholy, slightly mordant. It's the kind of thing Pete Doherty often went about trying to produce quite self consciously .I think he made a lot of good stuff of his own but it was generally rather knowing by comparison.

But Syd is different somehow. Syd was the first of a kind and his fall was sad and slow and you felt something could have been done about it.

The talent here is clear . The record has Dave Gilmour on bass. Richard Wright on keyboards and Jerry Shirley on drums. It's sloppy. Deliberately so.  It's veined in wisdom and sadness. A good record to listen to as the sun goes down.
