Matt Berry was not a musician or artist I was aware of until late yesterday. I spotted a post on social media, from RPM Records. My favourite local record shop and record player providers. I guess it was from Ric,h who mans the store most frequently. Class guy.
Anyway he was playing a copy of Berry's latest album Heard Noises which came out on Friday. The vinyl copy. Resplendent, sky blue vinyl, Rich alwaysknows his stuff so I started listening to the record. It gave me a natural break from Godfather II which I had been watching yesterday evening. Much as I love Godfather II you do need a break from its constant psychological attrition. The mood of slight terror. It sometimes feels like it's five hours long.
Heard Noises is 50 minutes long. By contrast to Godfather II it's not remotely attritional. Quite the opposite. It's gentle, soothing. Strangely both pastoral and oceanic and generally a really great, smooth ride.Listening again on Sunday mornung while waiting for my day it's a difficult record to place. Berry doesn't have a distinctive voice though he does clearly have a deeply nuanced understanding of music and a desire to move, relax and intrigue his listener whuch works for me.
He's something of a Renasissance Man clearly Matt Berry. A man of many parts. An actor, a multi-instrumentalist with a taste for genre skipping. Acid Jazz, FolK Rock. Wherever his muse and instincts take him. A stoutish, bearded man. One of the disciples perhaps. A slimmer version of Demis Roussos if you're feeling unkind. The album is pure 2025 joy anyhow. I imagine Tim Burgess and Mark Ronson would concur and approve too.
