Song(s) of the Day # 3,472 Avey Tare

If you follow these things you will probably be aware of your feelings about Animal Collective and the careers and records of their individual members. Avey Tare s co-founder is back with another album 7s to delight or confound you depending on where you stand on these things.

I have to say for the most part I'm probably un the latter camp. I like my leftfield and quirky American Indie eccentricity as much as the next. I was there when Beck and Pavement made their mark. Since then I've attached myself to The Walkmen, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan, Vampire Weekend and more. I've done my bit for this particular cause.

If I was a jury for the Animal Collective / Avey Tare case though, I would more than likely still be out. I find them frustratingly elusive and willfully so much of the time. Being detached and not really nailing melodies or moods, continuously changing the subject is something I find frustrating in records just as much as I do in people and conversations and 7s is an excellent case in point.

I enjoyed it. Honest I did. It's an expression of a particular talent. But I also feel, as I do with his band that the boy is artful and sometimes deliberately so in search of a Brian Wilson / Syd Barrett 'genius at work' tag he doesn't fully deserve. As generally in the cases when a record doesn't fully engage me, I'll give it a score. Appropriately 7.
