I've written about Guardian Singles before. On the occasion of their debut album, in 2021. They're back with their second Feed Me to the Doves and its well worhy of cupping an ear to and writing about again.
The band, first and foremost have a great name, taken from a column where middle aged and probably middle class lonely hearts seek their life partners. They hail from New Zealand, and are something of an Indie supergroup, though I won't bother you with a roll call of where they all were previously.
The songs on here are melodic, barbed Mayday distress signals. Clenched and urgent, they remind me of Wire's first two albums most of all. But also those inspired by Wire, Mission of Burma, the early Flying Nun bands and Husker Du.
Guardian Singles are too smart for this world and the realisation of that wounds them. This isn't always the easiest listen as its informed by pain. The immediacy, the melodies and the beauty within this pain mean perseverance is amply rewarded.
