M83. A band name that gives you little to grab hold of. Fantasy, an album that reminds you within the first three minutes of its opening track Water Deep of Krautrock, Air, New Gold Dream period Simple Minds and Giorgio Moroder.
It goes on to branch out in different directions from there. A Poppy record. Plenty of 1982 - '84 electropop. Not all things I cared for at the time but skillfully rendered.
Air is probably the best comparison. Even Daft Punk fits to a certain degree. M83 are French. From Antibes. They've been making records since 2001 and rising, gradually ro where they are now.
If in some ways they seem a natural next step. Air meet Daft Punk and take it to the Eighties. Fantasy is M83 are moving onto the next larger venue, higher profile releases. They've been doing this for twenty years now, their sound is honed.
That doesn't make it any less enjoyable if ever so slightly bland occasionally. It's a pretty mainstream and very accessible record and they deserve success.
