Song(s) of the Day # 2,882 Kitner

Kitner, a quartet from Boston released a gritty album called Shake The Spins earlier on this year. I think it's their first. It's a lived in, weary record, slightly worn, like the city it hails from, but defiant and rugged ,with well crafted, literate tunes.

The Replacements are the most obvious antecendents for what's going on here. The lead singer of Kitner certainly has something of Westerberg's throaty, 'life's tough but at least I'm still here', ennui and determination about him.

Kitner get knocked down, but they get up again, you're never going to keep them down. This is quite an interesting record to chance upon late in 2021. It certainly sounds nothing at all like Gang of Four or The Fall. The Replacements are hardly the most evident reference point these days. But The Replacements were always pretty great and even though the influence is always readily apparent on Shake The Spins Kitner do their legacy justice. One more for the road.

  1. Cheers, Bruce, I like that! Always partial to The Replacements, mind...
