Song(s) of the Day # 3,298 Quasi

Yesterday was my kind of record release day. I can't remember one that I enjoyed so much. It had pretty much everything. A fabulous Yo La Tengo record. Quelle surprise. More about that later. Wonderful stuff from The Golden Dregs. Black Eagle Scout, Paramore, Lisa O'Neill. That's just the ones I know. For those who like that kind of thing there's even a new Maria Carey record. And then there's Quasi.

There's definitely a case to be made that Janet Weiss was actually the cool one in Sleater Kinney all along. Certainly the one with the best sense of humour. Quitting that band a couple of years back after years of service when she decided that they were becoming self important and smug. Turns out they were. Gong back to her roots with Quasi with her actual former husband, Sam Coomes. Their new record is called Breaking the Balls of History. That's more than enough to recommend it highly in itself.

The album is great fun too I'm delighted to report. It recognises that Rock & Roll is often at its best when it's at its trashiest. A fact that Iggy Pop, Blondie, The Cramps and The B52's certainly recognised. This is a record that never takes itself seriously and has one hell of a time for 35 minutes or so while it delves through the jewel box of Rock & Roll without bothering to wash it's hands first. Seek out.
