'The Pastels playing Mazzy Star,' Semi Trucks new album Vs California has all the lugubrious chug of old school independent music the way these bands in particular did it back in the day.
Led by Californian Brendan Sepe, also of The Pesos, the record is most obviously grounded in the romantic hum of the Velvet Underground.
The kind of thing that you can imagine William Reid, David Roback, Kurt Cobain, Dean Wareham and Juno all warming too. Released towards the end of 2021 Vs California is not a record that will surprise so much as offer warm comforting memories of a particular sound and sensibility. I warmed to it more, the longer it played.
