Echo & The Bunnymen came to mean such a lot to me after I first saw them playing Back of Love on Top of the Pops in 1982. Introduced by Peter Powell as 'The Pride of Liverpool' the appropiation seemed apt. They were aloof, angular, uptight, they were cool, just the right kind of outsider cool, just when I was just at the age for an outsider band to attach myself.
Back of Love was such assured, angular pop product. Intense, literate and urgent. Their first proper Hit Single, more came in the following years. They taught me to stare into the distince imagining I was deep every time for a few years every time my photo was taken. They were just perfect.
