Just out today. A collection of songs from Nineties veterans Built To Spill paying respects to the talent and legacy of Daniel Johnston, though it was recorded before his death. Johnston, who passed last year, had a singular vision, which sadly slotted mostly under the radar during his lifetime given his 'outsider' status.
This record ignores that unecessary distraction, focussing utterly on the songs and laying bare what a treasure trove they are. Grounded most obviously in the tradition of the early Beatles, who Johnston loved above all others. Elsewhere there are reminders of the glory of Jonathan Richman, Big Star, Kurt Cobain, Jad Fair and Teenage Fanclub, a naked sense of childlike wonder.
Given Johnston's well documented mental health issues, it would be easy to get distracted onto other issues rather than focussing on just how great and remarkable his back catalogue is. This collection makes that abundantly apparent and is a beautifully rendered labour and act of love.
A reminder if one is ever needed that some of the finest things exist towards the margins and always will. This record sings of all the pain and joys of being alive. It's altogether wonderful. I'll be listening to it on repeat today. Hear it.
