Monster is by far my least favourite of R.E.M's initial run of ten albums. It feels that for the first time in their career, they're trying on clothes that don't really fir them. But I've never had a problem with opener Kenneth. It swings.About the oddest incident when anchorman Dan Rather was attacked by two men on Park Avenue. During the assault one of the men kept shouting, 'What's the frequency Kenneth? at Rather. Perfect obscurantism for R.E.M. A more detailed reading of the meaning of the song can be found here. I like it because like many of the best things the band did it leaves interpretation open. In addition to having a good tune.
