Songs Heard on the Radio # 344 Sports Team

Note to world. Too many bands and artists naming themselves after sports nowadays. Seems a bit predictable and offputting in terms of encouraging the neutral listener to discover more about the band or artist in question. Still, this lot have something going for them. A song that evokes the wonderful call and response of early Dexys. Something of Jarvis in here too and a neat bit of debunking of modern myths in the lyric. Nice video too.

They're Cambridge graduates. Their heroes are John Betjamin, Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan. They rail against the mundanity of modern existence in a humorous but not uncommitted way. They have a pop at Idles and even sacred cows Fontaines D.C. in interview. They sing of the empty spaces of Middle England. They have a poor name but should be worth watching judging on this so long as they don't turn into the Kaiser Chiefs.
