Song(s) of the Day # 1,478 Red River Dialect

The new Red River Dialect album, Broken Stay Open Sky, is crammed to the seams with thoughtful, well crafted songs that draw from the great heritage of late sixties and early seventies folk music. Beautiful thoughtful musings on the nature of life and our ongoing relationship with the awe-inspiring environment we live in.

A six piece based in Falmouth, Cornwall a part of Britain where the landscape is at its most stunningly beautiful, the awareness of this seeps in to their songs informing every thing that they do. It's a lovely record with songs allowed to unfurl at a slow, steady pace. Songwriter and singer David Morris intones in a gentle considered manner and the band evidently relish playing together thoroughly and this pleasure in what they're doing reaps results. Broken Stay Open Sky is like an evening in winter spent in a warm and welcoming pub with a group of old and trusted friends. Some songs linger longer than others but generally the more the band immerse themselves in the trance of their songs the more pleasing and calmly hypnotic the results.

Just seven songs, but most of them stretching beyond the five minute mark, elegaic and pleasing closer Campana brings the curtain down on a fine and poignant album. I imagine they'd be wonderful live and they have every right to be deeply proud of the small spells they've cast here.
