Good albums are like buses. You wait around for ages and then two or three arrive at once. At least that's been the case for me in the last few days. And fairly close to the top of the heap is the neatly named Sleepless Dreamer, the debut album from Pearl Charles.
Pearl's a singer. Of songs that plug the gap between AOR and that place where Fleetwood Mac struck gold during their Rumours recording sessions. This may not sound particularly exciting in itself but for the fact that on Sleepless Dreamer the songs are so damned accomplished and Pearl is so great at putting them across. For thirty five minutes it feels that we are in Los Angeles in the Summer of 1977 utterly oblivious of Punk concerns and that's exactly the place and time to be.
