Hookworms new album Microshift has been the focus of considerable media attention in the UK, months before its official release today. Lauded by Mojo, Uncut and The Guardian championed by tastemakers like Marc Riley and James Endeacott and Rough Trade, it seems their time has truly come.
And the album itself is very much worth the wait and hype. It's a bold record by any standards. Moving beyond the band's previous touchstones Suicide, Neu and Spacemen 3 into a brave new pop future. It seems sure to reap them rewards. Microshift is quite dazzling. Songs last as long as they need to here, anywhere between three and eight minutes and pretty much everything is drenched in a glorious and exuberant positivity. I'm set to see them at The Cluny, a small venue in Newcastle, in a month or so. Judging by this startling record they'll be moving on to bigger things from that point on.
