The Heart of Rock and Soul # 729 The Animals

'Eric Burdon was the best singer in the first wave of the British Invasion (the second wave brought Stevie Wonder), but if it were just up to Burdon, 'Don't Let Me Be Understood' might be as draggy as Simone's original. What snaps it to life is Alan Price whose "tremendous organ phrases" (as producer Mickie Most once called them) work with Hilton Valentine's seething guitar to create a language all their own. You could call it the blues and you wouldn't be far wrong.'
