Song(s) of the Day # 625 Sibylle Baier

Yesterday was Bill Ryder-Jones day for me. Listening to his great songs, scrolling down his Spotify playlist anticipating his new record led me to this. A lost German Folk singer of the seventies. Unreleased at the time but compiled on CD in 2006. Beautiful stillness. It's a quite remarkable set of recordings partly because when they were made, between 1970 and 1973, they were not intended for public consumption.

As a result they have an unmediated purity. Baier sings about the details of domestic life, preparing food, sitting and thinking and meditating on life. As well as other equally important stuff. Underpinned almost solely by an acoustic guitar playing variations on Leonard Cohen's Suzanne. It's a wonderful lost and found object. More on the subject on this great website article
