250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 131 The Triffids - The Black Swan

Summer's almost gone. But why should I care. I'm off to Dublin in a bit over a week and I have a day off online teaching today. I've just had my bath and now I'm at my desk listening to The Black Swan by The Triffids. David McComb's unmistakeable baritpne. He could do Jim whne he chose to. That mainly but melodic baritone. Saint Nick never mastered the melody.

The Black Swan was the band's swansong. They never made the commercial inroads they should have done. The Black Swan is a varied album. McComb apparently was listening to a fair but of Hip Hop. But it has some gems and I like to listen to it every six months or so. The Triffids always liked to wander off the beaten track. That was a central part of their appeal. Compare I'm afraid with U2. Follow the money.

  1. Gotta love some Triffids! This was the only tour I managed to see them. Seem to remember the stage bedecked with red velvet and a giant throne in the middle.

    1. Seriously Darren. That sounds great. I saw them in the summer of 86 which was a wonderful time for me. I think in North Islington, My man memory is McComb stretching his arms out horizontally ostage and it making me think of a condor spreading its wings. there was something quite magbificent about that man. I still haven't seen the film

  2. I haven't seen it either! Wow, I've just seen it's free on Tubi. No excuses now! He was a magnificent man, that's for sure. I can picture him from your description vividly!

  3. I watched it this afternoon. Found it quite moving (although everything makes me emotional at the moment). It's very much a standard talking heads, chronological approach, which misses out or glosses over a number of things (especially drug use). But it's lovingly made and there is fantastic Triffids footage from the whole of their career. And the songs! Which is just what I wanted. I'm not keen on a warts and all approach anyway. Enjoy!

    1. I enjoyed it a lot too. I will watch it again and write up my thoughts. I thought it was very perceptive in some ways Darren. Thanks a lot for tipping me off. I've wanted to see this for a while. I imagine they had to show some restraint given his family taking part. It was very beautiful certainly..
