1983 Singles # 9 Heaven 17

Heaven 17 were the most political of bands. These were the most political of times. The memory of inner city rioting was still raw. The miner's strike was next. Heaven 17 took the temperature of the times with their first two album Penthouse & Pavement and #83's Luxury Gap and you sensed that the North was dead.

Luxury Gap spawned a clutch of great and varied singles. They all spoke of different things. Come Live With Me of a vaguely seedy tryst between an older man and a younger woman. Crushed by the Wheels of Industry was about exactly that. Exactly what was happening.

Temptation, their smash hit was about glitzy dancefloor sex. Proper Soul, they had a feel for it much greater than most of their contemporaries. t was made for wall to wall daytime radio play and got it. Although very much of its time in terms of production values, it still sounds bloody great.
