Song(s) of the Day # 2,299 Melenas

Pamplona quartet Melanas' seconmd album Dias Raros is a welcome splash of Indie colour and vibrancy as we head into the second phase of Lockdown Spring 2020. Setting off with Primer tiempo which re-imagines Stereolab as a Garage band, the record proceeds to breathe fresh life into familiar generic staples.

Underpinned by Velvet '69 Live chug, this record is a smal treat. Reminding me at various points of Novella, early Lush, Feelies, Flying Nun and Young Marble Giants, it's an understated but quietly determined record.

Released on the Trouble in Mind label that brought us the splendid En Attendant Anna second Juillet, in a January that seems an ever more distant memory, Dias Raros is a similar treasure trove of Indie Disco pleasures. The fact that Melenas sing in Spanish matters little or even at all as these kind of small joys are increasingly an internationally recognisable tongue.

There's something slightly blurred and indistinct about Melenas' mode of delivery. The songs are not as fully formed and resplendant as those on Juillet. Nevertheless I've thoroughly enjotyed my first couple of spins of this and will certainly be back for more.
