I was surprised to find the album Collapse Into Now by Guided By Voices on the jukebox at Rosie's on Thursday. Did a little research into the record yesterday and put this on last night and it sounded great. A hugely prolific band, they've produced twenty or so records over the course of thirty years and this one, which came out in 1999, was something of a push for greater commercial attention, produced as it was by The Cars Rik Okasek who gives proceedings something of a new wave sheen.
The website Stereogum produced a countdown of the band's best records and this landed up a measly eighteenth but it sounded OK to me. But then again they are a fine, pioneering band, something of an underground version of R.E.M., guided as much by the poppier instincts of Wire and the dynamics of the early Who singles as by voices.
