Not a hit maker. Haines had a brief moment in the sun in the early nineties with his band The Auteurs, whose debut album New Wave is a still under-appreciated gem of twisted English sensibility. Since then he has taken on increasingly darker and individually driven projects which maintain a public profile for himself as an almost living embodiment of the term maverick so this is a good place to start this particular series. An interesting, embittered but always caustic presence on the margins of British Pop Culture. His writing is worth tracking down, he blogs and he's always diverting in interview mode.
