The Heart of Rock and Soul # 640 Kool & the Gang

'A great band - one of the first fully fledged funk ensembles, ranking among the aristocracy of black album rock - celebrates itself. The swing reference in the title is no brag, just fact. Like most rock and soul, Kool's is syncretic: the guitars are straight out of James Brown, the bass line and vocal wails sound like the Family Stone. But if the horn charts and vocal chants sound reminiscent, that's because the Gang provided the format for about a quarter of the funk that's come down the pike since.'
