Well we've been here before but Sons of Hippies are my new favourite band. At least for today. Let me count the ways. First, their name. Unusual and distinctive and apparently accurate it gives an immediate impression that the group themselves might be worthy of some attention and they prove to fulfill that suspicion.
Secondly, they're from Tampa, Florida. About time there was a great band from there. Thirdly their promos, which tell a story, have lots of fun, complement the music and give you sufficient information about them to let you decide if you want to explore some more. Fourthly the music itself, which as I said, more than lives up to the psychedelic promise of their name
First up here Spaceship Ride chugs amiably along until a couple of minutes into the video singer Katherine Kelly comes out with the genius 'turn your radio on...' hook at which point the song takes off. Kim Deal and Grace Slick sharing lead in Alice in Wonderland or Lord of the Flies. Or perhaps they're just playing Red Indians!
Second promo, Rose, seems to take Quentin Tarantino as its lead off source of inspiration and proceeds to use a whole series of his trademarks well. Perfect Retro Chic. A trio of beauties in Fifties swimming costumes appearing from nowhere on a glorious summer day washing a classic car before deciding that murder might be a good idea. Highly stylised and sensual of course, classic Rock and Roll imagery until it kicks into the bloodbath finale which once again you imagine Tarantino might well have had a hand in directing.
Mirrorball, meanwhile has Reagan and Nixon masks, hula hoops, ninjas, straws and cocaine. This is a band that knows how to kick back. In any case, just say no kids. Though you might like to say yes to Sons of Hippies!
Sorry about the corny sign off line but it's almost eight o'clock on a Sunday morning, I'm on holiday for a couple of weeks and in need of breakfast. Sons of Hippies get a huge thumbs up from me. All of these songs and videos are a least a year or so old. I look forward to new product. If the good times don't get them first.
