Blonde Redhead are a band apart. What they do is very unusual and quite difficult to achieve. To create what is actually Pop music but also genuinely strange at one and the same time. It's a knack that some have. Bowie, Sparks to name a couple of obvious examples. But most bands and musicians generally follow certain routes and constrictions. Very few actually set off on their own.
But I've always felt that Blonde Redhead a band based in New York City and composed of male Italian twins and a Japanese woman, have made every effort to do so. They've certainly been round the block on this endeavour. Forming in 1993.
During their time they've released ten albums, toured globally and made minor variations on an essentially Dream Pop / Shoegaze template. They're a shining example of how to have a serviceable career in Pop Music without ever truly disturbing the universe. Their most feted album, Misery Is a Butterfly is rated 2,668 on the Best Ever Albums chart. They are not by any means essential. Unless that is, they soundtracked your first kiss or great romance, as they surely did for many.
Still, they're back, after a ten year break, and I for one am glad. Sit Down for Dinner does what they've always done. Provide an ethereal, poppy, strangely androgynous electro soundtrack for those who like those things. I certainly do. It's a fine record.
