A cursory delve into the strange history of Dutch Pop is some journey.. Focus, Golden Earring, Shocking Blue, Nits, Legendary Pink Dots. The only common denominator contrariness.
The current scene is fascinating. Lewsberg, Rats on Rafts.standing out in an outstanding Rotterdam scene, Dollum's Pop experimentalists The Homesick. There are others. I'll leave you to explore for yourselves. Trust me it's worth doing so.
The Homesick's latest, an epomympus album, picks up where 2020's superb The Big Exercise left off. Versed in Post Punk rythms and curiosity. Isn't everything these days?, They take a genuinely creative and inventive approach to the conunmdrum of making te much abused decrption of Post Punk a genuinely releavant proposition..
The Homesick positively fizzes with invention and inspiration. As with The Big Exercise you find yourself cast adrift in a universe of wonder. Half Space Age laboratory, half Willie Wonka's chocolate factory. Other reference points I picked up on while listening to the record; Wire, The Shins.
The trio may have lost a bit of momentum since The Big Exercise. They were on Sub Pop then, they no longer appear to be. They're no less fun or intriguing. A band to dive into like a clear lake in a forest.
