Echo The Diamond, New York dweller Margaret Glaspy's third album sounds from its opening notes like a highly self-conscious statement record. 'This is me and I've done it my way.' I have no problems with that at all but there may be a danger of stepping into Alanis territory. I never took to Alanis.
There is a sense that as she comes to each chorus she's building up to unleashing some central profound truth and we in response need to raise a clench fist and a straight arm in response. It's all rather declamatory for my tastes.
That's not to say I didn't glean any fun from my time spent with Glaspy this morning. She's an able performer and has spent time as support with Wilco and Spoon. She knows how to put a song together but after a while it seemed life one statement of self assertion after another and I began to long to take it off and put my recently purchased copy of Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville on in its place.
