Song(s) of the Day # 3,443 Tough Age

An album I've been plating on and off for a while now and have been particularly charmed by on repeated spins over the last  couple of days. Tough Age, a gawky and decidedly awkward trio from Vancouver who released an album a couple of months back called Waiting Here.

The album focuses on recurrent themes of wanting to be yourself and not allowing mom and dad and the outer world dictating on how you choose to live your life. Musically their songs fall back on the pathways laid by The Cure and Joy Division way back when. Focusing primarily on both bands essentially Pop instinct rather than their underlying terror.

Flying Nun is the other fundamental ingredient at play here. That extraordinary set of bands who themselves found inspiration in the records The Cure, Joy Division and The Fall were putting out aon the other side of the world. Waiting Here is a wonderful exploration of the pleasures and pitfalls of those teenage years.

  1. Thanks, Bruce. Came across this via Twitter a few days ago, but hadn't had a chance to listen. It started off very Joy Division, but mutated into Flying Nun very quickly. Specifically, The Bats, as his voice was very like Robert Scott. Good listen!
