Ennui. That's as good a description of the new Jesse Williamson album Time Ain't Accidental as any. A song from here should have been on the Thelma & Louise. The whole record is incredibly Thelma & Louise frankly. I'm not complaining. I like that movie.
Two pretty middle aged ladies at the wheel of a cool sports car. Wind in their hair, driving across a great American landscape seeking their revenge on men and life.
Jesse Williamson has been around for a while. She's had big features in Uncut Magazine which understands this great American longing, this pain, the feeling of wanting to go 'a hundred down the highway...' better than most.
She's been round the block. Particularly recently. She's had a protracted break up with a long time partner who left her high and dry at the start of the pandemic. Ah fuck that guy. It's Jesse we're interested in here and she's getting her own back in the best possible way.
It's a great record. Pained and honest. Jesse's from Texas. Thelma and Louise hail from Arkansas but it hardly matters. They might as well come from the Lone Star state. That's where they're heading.. Jesse is either Thelma or Louise. That doesn't matter either. She's not planning on falling for Brad Pott's good looks and charm. That's for sure.
I've only had one listen so far, need to have another. Been following her since Heart Song and really like her. Plus there was the Plains album last year, too, of course. Weirdly, I have just come across the new Anna St. Louis album (playing it right now, it's great!) and Jess sings backing vocals, apparently, along with Kacey Johansing and others. Worth a listen!
ReplyDeleteI like the record. Thanks for the reminder about Anna St Louis. I like her. Will give it a listen.
