A short ten minute film to preview the new Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks album Sparkle Hard. And what does it tell us? That Stephen Malkmus likes to train with a tennis ball machine, ride his horse, play songs and joke around with his band and stand guard on the elegant castle turreted tower of his elegant house. So it doesn't tell us much that we couldn't have guessed.
But it's less mannered than it might have been once. And in some ways it's rather touching. Malkmus comes over entirely as a Wes Anderson character as it seems he has fashioned himself. Courtney Love astutely called him 'the Grace Kelly of Rock'. This still fits and it's a role he very much plays to the full. So while the philosophising about what motivates him to keep on doing this as he breaches middle age doesn't actually make much coherent sense this is a gentle little film and had its desired effect on me anyway, of making me want to hear the album it heralds.
