A first for this series in that the name of the subject of the song is not mentioned by name in the title or indeed in the lyrics. But the song is quite definitely about Peter Knowles, a skilful, (if petulant) footballer, who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the sixties, was on the fringes of the England squad, but gave up the game at the height of his career to become a Jehovah's Witness. Billy Bragg plays poetic tribute.
