There's one immediately distinctive and divisive quality about deer scout's latest album Woodpecker which will decide how long you want to listen to it and whether you care to listen to it again. Deer scout's ( that's Dena Miller to friends and family) voice. It has that Joanna Newsom quality. Heck, she sounds like Joanna's younger sister.
That opening paragraph might have decided you as to whether you are going to check this one out or not. Miller by turns is cute, winsome, playful, slightly shrill. For some I imagine plain annoying.
The record gets better so it's a shame if you don't make it very far. It's New York Folk essentially. Owing as much to Karen Dalton and Joanna Sternberg essentially as to Newsom.
Give it time and at least a single sitting. Please. It's a gift that keeps on giving. There's great talent on show here. Beauty too,
