As I've mentioned, there was a lot of Liverpool around in '83. The Lotus Eaters were formed in '82, released this, their debut single in July '83. and were gone. At least from the public gaze. They never troubled the charts again.
An absolutely perfect One Hit Wonder story. The First Picture of You is the encapsulation of teenage wonder. Lotus Eaters were a duo as I remember. But it's the doe eyed singer who sticks in the memory more than anything else. Perfect loss of virginity material for Smash Hits readers. Jim Kerr's more innocent Scouse cousin. He seemed in eternal soft focus on Top of the Pops where the band appeared every couple of weeks for what seemed like months that summer.
For me it was all rather wet. I was after slightly more muscle from my pop music. Even if it was sensitive. So, The Bunnymen, most of all in 1983 Aztec Camera, and then, as Autumn came, R.E.M.. These were incredibly Romantic times and such very good ones to be young. The First Picture of You sounds much better to my ears now than it did at the time.
