Back then I was working as a clerk at the Electricity Council in London, having failed to complete my A Levels. It was a strange, melancholy period of my life. Each morning, I commuted on a small coach from a small down on the Essex-Hertfordshire borders, where I lived with my parents, to Millbank, where our offices were located. It was a long, tedious journey, sometimes it took more than two hours and then I had to do it in reverse in the evening, and I passed the time reading and listening to music on my Walkman.'
