100 Mavericks

'An unorthodox or independent minded person

individualist, nonconformist, free spirit, unorthodox person, unconventional person, original, trendsetter, bohemian, eccentric, outsider.'

A new day, a new series and challenge. Music is heavily populated with mavericks of course. They're the ones who keep things interesting who challenge the status quo and push things onward. I've set myself the task to list a hundred of them and write a bit about each of them, one a day over the next three months. Counting down from one hundred to one. Some massively successful. Some still cult concerns. This of course is by no means an attempt at a definitive list. Such a task is quite impossible although a great many of the usual suspects will be here.

It's purely subjective, a hundred people in my own record collection who are somewhat unusual, driven, individual and have added something to the mix. All of whom can be loosely categorised under the category of Rock and Roll. So no Jazz. No Nina Simone or Sun Ra though they definitely belong on other lists. Already having some regrets having just written that about no Nina, but there you go.

No Bruce Springsteen. He's the polar opposite of what I'm thinking of. Great artists though he is. But he represents a kind of reality that the people I'm going to list react against in one way or another. No Elton John or Ozzy Osborne. They don't mean enough to me, this is a purely subjective thing. Hopefully the series will develop some intrinsic coherence as it goes along. So here we go!
