Lead singer in the early Mercury Rev, he sang on their early singles and Peel Sessions and the albums Yerself Is Steam and Boces. An uncompromising voice for sure, he doesn't take the mic on all of their early songs but when he does, you know he's there. Some, myself included, would say the band lost something on his departure, even though it was from this point on that they started to make their mark commercially. Yerself Is Steam is a definite masterpiece of its type. Baker left in 1993, claiming musical and personal differences. He recorded an album, World under the name Shady the following year. He's followed an underground path since, gaining employment as a studio engineer as well as recording with his new band Variety Lights.
