A Moment In Time N.M.E, 6th July 1985 - # 1 The Front Cover

I bought the N.M.E on a regular for over 25 years on a regular basis. Between the early Eighties and the mid-Nineties. I continued buying it when I could therefter when it was clearly in decline. I like reading good, critical writing about music. The N.M.E. in the Eighties was the best critical writing about the counterculture I've ever consumed in real time.

I recently rebought a copy of my favourite edition of the NME. From 6th July 1985. When I'd personally arrived back from a life changing experience. Working at Casa Locarno, a guest home run by the Swiss Council of Chrurch in Locarno in Ticino, Switzerland.

I came back looking to do a couple of things. To buy Fables of the Reconstruction, R.E.M's third album which had been released while I was away and I had feverish anticipation for., And I wanted to catch up with what I'd been missing music wise.

So I bought this N.M.E. It had R.E.M. on the cover for the first time. Michael Stipe gazing wistfully into space.on the front cover. A tagline Peter Anderson shoots the rapids with R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. Life didn't get better han this.

In the coming days. more from this terrific time capsule to a different world.
