Chastity Belt originally out of Waila Waila Washington, are one of the few bands I can think of that make an interesting thing out of the definitive Joy Division sound and perspective. I'll try to make my case.
Take the latest Chastity Belt album Live Laugh Love.Their fifth in all for those that keep count and their first since 2019. It's spare. Features a prominent bass which often seems to be the lead instrument and maintains a slightly depressive attitude to matters. Chastity Belt like Joy Division rarely come out with what you might call 'happy' songs. Quite the contrary. While this doesn't make you fear for the life of Julai Shapiro. You imagine she's nor a complete stranger to a dark mood.
Anyway. Another very solid record. Not departing from their signature sound exactly. But enhancing it. They're developing an impressive body of work. I hope they come and play my home town at some point. In the meantime this will more than do.
