The ball of wool begins to unravel. This is a good thing and something of a relief in a book where there are a lot of strands. Coe is a great fan of the Eigteenth Century novel particularly. Henry Fielding. With lots of plotlines, characters and narrative threads.
But here things sudenly start to make sense. William, in a state of terror and confusion, flees Madeline's party and makes his way to his friends Tony and Judith, (where he is due to babysit) in terror that the police are trying to track him down. From there, via an incredible discussion with their son Benjamin, he heads towards the novels denouement. I will not reveal the nature of the road here. Like all good plots its best discovered or rediscovered for yourself, Needless to say The Smiths play on.
