250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 60 Jeff Buckley - Grace

Jeff Buckley was an intensely singular brooding and emotional artist and Grace, the ony completed album he released during his lifetime remains an intensely singular brooding and emotional record. Personally I drift in and out some of  it, It's occasionally overwrought and strains a little too hard. He wants to show that he can do too much sometimes. He's frequently resembles Icarus here and we all know what happened to that one. But you can't really fault an artist for ambition. There's so much here that rewards return. And it offers greater retutns if anything. It's a Golden Hour.

1986 Singles # 22 Billy Bragg

'Her husband was one of those blokes. Who only laughed at his own jokes...'

The consequences of doing the wrong thing when you're too young.

Patti Smith - Bread of Angels # 5 Patti Smith

The Golden CBGB's years Patti drifts unto the realms of pretension as his her tendency and it's all rather wonderful but probably doesn't stand up to historical scrutiny. But that's what makes her Patti.

The NME - 1986 Year of the Triffids ? # 1 Dune

This copy of the NME came out on 5th January 1985. I was about to head off to Switzerland on my gap year experience. Meanwhile the NME emblazoned obscure Australian band The Triffids on the front cover and wodered whether 1985 would be their year. That probably didn't completely turn out to be the case. But they were rather magnificent nevertheless.

Dune is reviewed inside. Richard Cook, a fine writer, slags off the book; 'no more profound on questions of life, death and the universe than any other pulp junket.' He comments on Kyle Maclachan's unfortunate resemblance to Terry Wogan. The film is entirely staffed by cameo roles and David Lynch has undersold the vast acting talent at his disposal and comments on the oedipal nature of the earthwirms that populate his Fremen desert.. He writes it off as 'a project littered with misjudgement.... a terrible, tumultuous folly.'

1972 Top 30 - # 7 Slade

Slade couldn't spell but they could Rok!

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,465 Love - Da Capo

The second side of Da Capo, was a huge abberation . A nineteen minute jam called Revelation which is not aptly named. But Side A flies. There was no band quite like them. At the time or ever since.

Freedom, technicolor, love, madness. In equal measure. They're a bewildering band. 'Laughing, glad and full of glee.' An inspiration for so much wonderful music that came thereafter,

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 264 Ian Hunter - Shrunken Heads

The customary Al Kooper Dylan organ. The voice. Well worn. Apologetic. Weathered..This has Jeff Tweedy on biard and does what you hope iy will.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,297 Tessa Rose Jackson

If in doubt head for the lighthouse. Never a bad guiding orinciple and I have a pearl for Saturday morning. The Lighthouse a lilting and lovely Folk record by Tessa Rose Jackson that will conjur up warm reminders of Nick Drake, Bridget St. Johm and Laura Marling..And most winningly for me, Karen Carpenter.

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,466 Slowdive - Just A Day

Slowdive are a band that I struggle with. I was around with the furst wave of Shoegaze, ascene that is lauded and hugely influentual now though it was mocked for its timidity and po faced Home Coimties grandeur at the time  wuth the probable exception of My Bloody Valentine.

Now Slowduve are hailed as  trailblazers but they just move too slowly for my liking to have a genuine claim to blazing a trail.

1986 Singles # 23 Julian Cope

The Teardrop Explodes were over and well in the past by 1986 but Julian Cope appeared again, dusted down from the turtle shell of the album sleeve of Fried and blinking into the Wogan and Top of The Pops headlights and The Top Twenty. My sweetheart and I bonded over his charms and went to a fabulous gig in the university gig hall when he toured in support of St Julian. .Just hearing this takes me back to love. The best place to be.

1972 Top 30 - # 8 Melanie

Melanie had a rare charm and a raw. enduring sweetness.Quite right she was breaking The Top Ten back then.

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 265 The Holloways - So This Is Great Britain

Guerilla English Indie. A state of the Nation Address if the type that British groups have been prone to since the Sixties. This is a pint of lager and twenty B&H and one mire round before the last orders bell rings for my tastes.Tinny.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,296 Clementine March

Alan Partridge the great vulgarian comic creation of Steve Coogan is never truly at ease with the artistically or creatively inspired. The artistically inspired or inclined. He tries to engage with them but will inevitably be unable to keep up and so inadvertently or quite deliberately insults ior denigrates them, in any way that he san and ends up showing himself up..

You can imagine how Partridge would react to Frenchwoman Clementine March and her exquisite new album Powder Keg. It's for 'that lot' . Chamber, Brazilian Exotica, Jazz, Folk, Avant Pop. It's totally unrestrained and completely delightful. Stereolab, Cate Le Bon and The Raincoats come to mind. You can imagine the record collections of the musicians concerned and the audience members. .

Guest appearances from Naima Bock, Katy T, Pearson,  Alabaster De Plume and many more  It's a Friday night knees up for the Rough Trade hip set. It's so hip it hurts but why ever not. Clementine is doing select dates around the country in the coming weeks. Treat yourself.    .

Sly Dunbar 1952 - 2026

Sandie Shaw

1986 Singles # 24 Felt

Felt are a band whose appeal grows with the passing of time. I was in a record shop the other day and Forever Breathes The Lonely Word was playing and it sounded incredibly allurung. It sold zip.

250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 61 Wishbone Ash - Argus

My brother had this on cassette in the Seventies. It felt and feels like an older brother's record to me. Older guys with long hair, beards and more acquaintance with the ways of the world; the Wizard of Earthsea. Jethro Tull. The plough. Pipe smoke and a closer understanding of a bygone, Vanishing world.

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,467 The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion

The Black Crowes were already a throwback. Alman Brothers Lynyrd  Skynrd and all those good old Southern boys. This is laud back as you like. Urgent when ut needs to be.

1972 Top 30 - # 9 America

A fairly shameless Neil Young steal from first to last chord but beguiling regardless of that. What strikes me going through this countdown is how rich the charts were in terms of their narratives and variety,There's good music always but this is a time when you just needed to look at the charts for evidence of its riches.

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 266 Madness - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate

This seems to be an extended love letter to London, a city that I have lived un bit tired if. But Madness do a good job of extolling its virtues and this is all familiarly Madness from its earliest chords. I've just spoken to my best friend who turns 60 today. We grew up on the fringes of London together. Those important years.  There's something very comforting about Madness. The band, not the condition

Song(s) of the Day # 4,295 Searows

Searows Death in the Business of Whaling. An album that I was naturally disposed to warm to given that I've adopted the pursuit of whaling as a metaphor for the journey, guiding principles and momentum  of this blog. We drive into  the coming storm prow aloft head onwards in the face of it because it's all we can do. Where was I? Ah yes Searows,

This is folk essentually and dispenses atmosphere and tenacity in spades. This record has precedent; Big Thief, Alex G, Phoebe Bridgers and Ethel Cain.Glum resilience and digged and admirable durability. I'm much taken with this.,

1986 Singles # 25 The Mighty Lemon Drops

The Mighty Lemon Drops were everywhere in 1986. Everywhere in Norwich anyway which is where I was and where they played regularly over the course of the year.. They were clearly in awe and in thrall to Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes and The Doors. But those were all good things to be. Certainly for me at the time.

They were the subject of a fall out conversation that I had in Autumn between me and an important friend of mine who told me I wasn't allowed to like them anymore. It was one of the most preposterous conversations I ever had but it taught me something about people and the way they can tr tocontro; others. It was a parting on the waves. I realised in retrospect that it was one of those conversations that don't happen very often in life. That he thought he was the alpha male friend. I didn't see it like that.

1972 Top 30 - # 10- Don McLean

This is a song that means an enormous amount to me. Because my dearly loved and still dearly missed older sister had a copy of this album and when I play it I think of her and the pain she went though over so many years and the reaction in me is still frankly visceral.

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 267 Patti Smith - Twelve

Patti Smith throws herself into everything she does with the most sincere and hearfelt gusto. This is a slightly hit and miss affair. But you can't fault the endeavour. There are some spectacular surprising moments. She has an ability to take me out of myself like nobody else I know.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,294 Imarhan

.After a day out of It Starts With a Birthstone owing to Internet downage we're back in the saddle and riding the dunes with Imarhan their train and their latest Essam over the rising dunes towards the dawn of February.

You can't help but be transported. This is a familiar sound now of North African guitar driven folklore blues. But it doesn't make this record amy less transformative and magical. 'Riders on the storm. Into this' Err. Maybe that was someone else !.

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,468 The Strokes - Comedown Machine

When the Strokes arrived I pretty much listened to them non stop. I seriously considered moving to New York for a while. Just thinking of them brings memories flooding back, Comedown Machine is not a record I've listened to before. It sounds to me like a funky repositioning of the brand.

1986 Singles # 26 Shop Assistants

People are startimg to make a big thing of the 40th anniversay of the C-86 movement. It produced plenty of great records and bands but it didn't look at the time like a scene that was likely to have a lasting legacy. Actually it has. Kids will always want to be in bands. Shuffle onstage, mutter into a mic and make some unholy row.

1972 Top 30 - # 11 Sonny & Cher

From Television City in Hollywood. We now relise that all was not sun and laughter on Sonny & Cher's estate on Acedemia Drive. Still these cutesy ballad duets watm the heart despite thc flap of cheese on the accompanying burger.

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 268 Johnny Cash - America V : A Hundred Highways

These late Jonny Cash records are like newly discoverd Old Testament creeds. Wizened and wise.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,293 Isobel Waller Bridge

A record I've been llistening to a lot as we slip into the saddle and motor gently toward spring. Isobel Waller Bridge's Objects.. Ambient mindfullness. Not perhaps what I would have sat in my room and listened to when I was seventeen but frankly quite appealing and easeful listening currently. A record I'll return to and which I suspect will yield delightful harvest over the coming months,

1986 Singles # 27 The Pogues

'A devil moon took me through the alley....'

I didn't really drink seriously in 1986. I distanced myself from two friends who were beginning to do so during the year and started going out with a girl who only required a glass of wine to go entirely red in the face and develop a deeply enchanting rictus grin.. She froze. And this was generally a cue for me to take her home..

So I never really developed a Pogues drinking momentum during their prime. Which frankly came round about in 1986 with the release of the Poguetry In Motion EP. It really tells you pretty much everything about drinking heavily and what it can do. For better and for worse,  To make you laugh and make you cry, To make you despair of life irself and enable you to cope with that despair. It;s as good as Joyce and Beckett, As good as a pint of Guinness/ You can also put it on the jukebox in pubs..

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,469 Justin Timberlake - Future Sex / Love Sounds

Patti Smith - Bread of Angels # 4 The Shirelles

Patti goes to the Museum of Art in Phuladelphia with her father. He's intrigued by Dali. She sees Modigliani and recognises her own lanky frame. Her father prefers Dali to Picasso and Patti stands her ground. She feels she now has superlative allies.

Patti makes artistic intertextual parallels at every turn. She meets a biy called Johnny. Perhaps the prototype for the Johnny in Land. She discovers Pop Music. The Shirelles. It was banned by the Catholic Church ad if you think about it you can work out why. 'Music was our salvation. Expressing the inexpressible.'

Now Patti is in the decade where she takes flight. Rimbaud, Dylan. The tribe of black sheep. She marches out of Port Authority. Finds her partner in crime in Robert Mapplethorpe. She's covered this ground before in Just Kids. The cast assemble. Bobby Neuwirth, Jim Carrill, Allen Gunsburg, Lenny Kaye, Tom Verlaine, Eichard Hell. CBGBs. We're off !

250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 62 Broadcast - HaHa Sound

I'm doing what I most enjoy doing this Sunday afternoon. Listening to a record that sounds like nothing quite so much as tume running backwards. It's difficult to describe what I mean by this. Can do it. Television do it. Even educated fleas do it !

Broadcast do it very, very well. Their Broadcasts sound like Transmissions from the other side. A portal back to childhood where we all long to be, Hide and seek and then Jackanory. Time suspended . This is playful and quite consciously not aimed at the charts because that is definitely not always the place to be, .

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 269 M83 - Dead Cities , Read Seas & Lost Ghosts

I was intrigued by this so I watched a YouTube clip made by a geekish type. I was none the wiser.Ir's a swurling and rather wonderful immersive thang. Nuff said.

1972 Top 30 - # 12 Faces

Faces always looked liked they'd wandered out of a bar. Or else had decided to djyst set up and do the gig there. They were raw and rich and unshaven and had whisky on their breath and tabs in their pockets Utterly  unapologetic.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,292 Jane Weaver

It's a foggy day in Toon, I'm just back from church. There's a big match on in Newcastle today. A lot at stake. There's always a lot at stake. Fans wrapped in scarves. Battle colours. Coats of arms. Black and white . Claret and blue. Making therir way up the slope in the opposute direction from me to Gallowgate. Not to see a hanging but to watch Brazilians and Germans and English and Dutchmen chase a ball and net some momentary glory. Games with frontiers.Wars without tears.

I'm back in my flat now. There are plates and md mugs piled in the sink. But they can waut. I want to listen to this. The Fallen By Watchbird. The latest act of imagination and reimagination from Jane Weaver. A fifteen year anniversary release. Resilient female exploration and discovery. Bravery and wonder. Imagination has its dominion. Limitations don't exist., There are no watchtowers. No surveillance or control.  .

In a new Age of Anxiety we have two fundamental options. We can panic and overthink. Stress about our emotions and the world. Our loved ones. Our kin. Our friends. Ourselves, Or we can luxuriate and burrow within. Escape into a hatch and relax into space.. Burrow into the past, Succumb to the idea of freedom and release,

This record is a perfect example of this instinct and artistic impulse. A golden pathway through the hillside. It's boundless frankly. Now. I think I need to do something about those plates in my sink.  More on .The Fallen By Watchbird here.

250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 61 Squeeze - East Side Story

The thing about listening to bands like Squeeze when you were 12 was you couldn't understand the adult emotions. The pain the protagonists were feeling. The sheer drama of the emotions. But also that ther were emotions that coild be used  for commercial and humorous effect,

You didn't really know what love was. Ot how it felt to have tour heart broken. We still trade in this language because it's all we have, But perhaps we'll never get to the bottom of these ideas. The ultimate quest,.

For Squeeze it was always clear that The Beatles were the template. Two central songwriters. Lennon & McCartney, Tilbrook & Difford.Sings that rhy,ed. Melodies with hooks. The human heart the central focus. East Side Story had fourteen songs . Seven on a side. A veritable treasure chest.. .

1972 Top 30 - # 13 Greyhound

One of the most evocative and haunting songs of all.

1986 Singles # 28 Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth were jagged and uncompromising. Threatening. Resolute.

250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 62 Death & Vanilla - To Where The Wild Things Are

As you get older the music you're drawn to changes . I'm really increasingly attracted to music like this. The strange.. The unknow.n I think the best approach is to admit we know very little and proceed from there.

The instinct and impulses for this reord go back to The Early Velvet Underground but also draw strongly on how we all start. In  cot or crib. staring around us and taking in the wonders of the universe.

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 270 Lou Reed - Ecstasy

Listening to a late Lou Reed album may not feel like the thing I immediately need or want yo do. But then listen to the voice. Hear the understanding takung place between the musiciams/ Yje [roduction values. This is a street poetry. And Lou was a street poet.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,291 Craven Faults

What better for a late start on a Saturday mirning than another drive up the pennines and the thrill of the open Countryside and the road with latest album Sidings.

This is thrilling electronic experience. The open road. Let the days go by. Into the future. Craven Faults understand the process of slightly mundane bit inevitable transition.

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,470 Gary Numan

I parted company with Gary Numan when he parted company with Tubeway Army, A cursory listen to this doesn't make me feel mistaken..Numan is potent but I can only take so much of the robots dancing,

1986 Singles # 29 Nu Shooz

The kind of thing I wasn't into in 1986 but possibly should have been.

1972 Top 30 - # 14 Fortunes

True romance,

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 271 Simon Bookish - Everything / Everything

A less intelligent Neil Hannon. May become deeply irritating after about three songs,

Song(s) of the Day # 4,290 Smote

'Smite, smote, smitten.' Hey I'm an English teacher. I know how this stuff goes. They're from Newcastle or thereabouts Smote. Newcastle is where I live and I wouldn't live anywhere else . Living here suits  my soul and Smote suits my mood.

Latest album Songs From The Free House sounds rather 1972. Or like a deep dive with Gandalf into the Mines of Mordor. Orc and Hobbit alike plotting  pathways in search of The True Ring to rule them all.Amite get medieval on all our asses.  Donald Trump might be talking up his Board of Peace but I'm putting my money on Smote today. Beatiful molten, golden record.

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,471 The Cult - Love

I'm an easy going, open minded guy. But there's no excuse for The Cult

1986 Singles # 30 Suzanne Vega

I think we were all of us n that first year at university even if we didn't realise it or articulate or looking for our direction  and running mate. I found it in the summer term. I'd changed my major from history to literature  which seemed like a focus of enquiry that suited me and I hope still does. I also found someone to fall in love with which is something we should continually strive to do..

The object of my affections had a Suzanne Vega poster on the wall of her School of Residence bedroom. I can remember everything in there as vividly as if I'm sitting there now. Her bedspread. Her clothing heaped up in an unsightly but incredibly desirable and captivating pile. Her pillow which we laid down together and lay our heads on and gaze at each other in rapture,

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 272 John Cale - Hobosapiens

A late night with a mid to late John Cale album I hadn't heard before. It just feels like a serene way to spend your time. Class and grace. Listening to his records is a way of staying informed,.

1972 Top 30 - # 15 Badfinger

Badfinger were lovelorn romantics drawn to the heartbreak chord and tragically it transpired the cliff's edge. But they left their legacy,

Song(s) of the Day # 4,289 Peaer

If an apple a day keeps the doctor away. What can a Green Peaer do,'

Peaer have a ripe and tender soft skill set.  Doppleganger their latest album is a series of glorious set pieces. A series if loops, hops skips and lutzes in a smooth as silk routine which seems bound for a podium appearancear an arena near you.

Working in the time honoured slipstream of guitar indie worthies like Nap Eyes, Kiwi Jr. Parquet Courts and erm Pavement. It's a fabulous record. An adventure. It's incredibly clever. A set of chapters from Nabokov, Borges, McEwan and Kundera.

Very male, But sensitive with it . There's a fluency and ease here which I've kept coming back to over the last few day. A memorable night out in the comfort of your living room.

1986 Singles # 31 Lyres

Some of the best stuff in 1986 shot straight under the radar. Here's a case in point,

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,470 Fontaines D,C, -

Fontaines D,C, broke very large in 2024 with Romance in 2024, I liked it less than their previous records . That probably says more about me than Romance. It is a larger utterance of their previous gestalt. They stand by their guns and take more prisoners.

As I listen on a grim day in Newcastle I'm actually swept away by it. It makes me feel exactly as Bunnymen, The Cure and Joy Division made me feel I listened to them when I was 17. Emboldened. Inspired. It's a record that's brave, literary and rather majestic , The world is not always your friend but records like this make you feel like you're not alone.

1972 Top 30 - # 16 Donnie Elbert

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 273 Paul McCartney - Memory Almost Full

A Paul McCartney album and it immediately sounds like one. This is from 2007. But it could have been from 1967. 1977. 1997. Or now, You either like what the man does or you don't .I do.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,288 Eleven Plus Two = Twelve Plus One

What's coming down the 'Pop Cultural Chute?' Search me? You're not going to read about it here.  I like Pavement. R.E.M. Television. The Velvet Underground. Bo Diddley. Strictly old school

I love a record that clears it's throat takes its time. Then puts on its leather jacket and pilot's googles. Adjusts its seat in the cockpit, turns the key to ignition and heads straight for the stars.

Eleven Plus Two = Twelve Plus One's Antena my current squeeze, They're from Columbus, Ohio which sounds like a place I need to go to. Immediately. Today's Valentine though we're actually a few weeks away from all that nonsense.

This sounds like the best Rock & Roll night out you're likely to have . This week. Unhinged, brave,. Valorous. In the words of the man. 'She started shaking to that fine fine music. You know Her life was saved by Rock & Roll.'

Tuesday, January 20, 2026

1986 Singles # 32 Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Storm Warning indeed. Unhinged and all the more magnificent for it.

250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 63 The Jam - Sound Affects

Listening to the early Jam albums you're transported back to a vanished world of almost half a century ago when the coppers in your pockets had some valu, you could smoke upstairs on the bus and you dreamed of going out with that girl you saw walking down the road to college in a cool coat with long flowing hair  and checking out what was happening in this week's hit parade.

You can almost spell the chip fat at your local greasy spoon.  Taste the salt in the breeze on your tongue from the gale sweeping in from the coast.. These songs still sound lean and magnificent. I always think Bildungsroman when I hear early Paul Weller songs. Class conflicts. Small explosions and I'm not just talking about acne and heartbreak. Dreaming and detonations.

1972 Top 30 - # 17 Elvis Presley

It was strange to be young when Elvis seemed old. He sang about emotions you couldn't understand but somehow it all sounded nice. And right !

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 274 Supergrass -Road To Rouen

-Road To Rouen. Geddit !!! We're not taking Rouen France here folks! Supergrass strap on their saddles and head out on the road if that's not stretching metaphors too far. This is their fifth album and they're what you'd call seasoned journeyman by this time.

I always got the impression that Supergrass had a few Family and Traffic records stashed away somewhere in their record collections. This is mellow fruitfulness.

Song(s) of the Day # 4,287 Jana Horn

The streets are wet with rain and it feels like we're ready for Spring. Jana Horn's latest album is spinning. Ingenue beauty. Sybille Baier. Vashti Bunyan,, David Lynch. Slightly offkey outsider music. It's all better on the outside. That's the way to the inside.

Jana is playing at The Cumberland Arms at the beginning of March. I need to get my ticket and see if I can fid myself someone to go with. Donald Trump has decided he has a right to Greenland. Minerals? The world for the time being keeps turning.

Best Ever Albums - 2,000 - 1,001 - 1,471 Kings Of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak

1986 Singles # 33 Half Man, Half Biscuit

I fell in love in 1986. When you fall in love you never ever really fall out of love. I can see her now. Singing I Hate Nerys Hughes' a Half Man, Half Biscuit song in her little room in Waveney Terace  on the UEA Campus where we slept together and unwrapped each other and our selves in the third term of our first year at university..

250 Albums- An Arbitrary Rumble Through My Record Collection # 64 The Kinks Face To Face

'Music changes the way you feel inside.' James Brown

I first heard  The Kinks Face To Face in the Greenwich East Village in Spring 2001. It was my third time in New York and Belle & Sebastian seemed to rule the hip spaces of Manhattan., There were so many hip spaces in Manhattan. There always are and always will be..

I was visiting the city with one of my best friends and his partner. They would go on to get married, have two boys and get divorced some years later in no little acrimony and vituperation.

So much water under the bridge and meanwhile in the background Face To Face plays on my record player in 2026. True. Eternal. Like a river. A durty old river. Got to keep rolling. Always the same but always different.

500 Greatest Albums of the 2000's # 275 Fugazi - The Argument

Fugazi didn't pull their punches. Lean, mean and dangerous to know they're a lesson in minimalism and intent..
