I'm immediately drawn to anything advised by or connected to Bill Ryder Jones. He's a sensitive soul who loves his Love, His Beach Boys, his Beatles and La's. And you sense he's got space in his heart for Miles, Sly and Al too.
But most of all Bill seems to like his seminal White Indie Classics. Rubber Soul, Pet Sounds, Forever Changes, Village Green Preservation Socierty #1 Record. High Land, Hard Rain, Meat is Murder, Steve McQueen, Stone Roses, The La's, If You're Feeling Sinister. Sensitive boys stroking their prized record collections on a school night.
I don't blame him. His latest project, Birmingham's Swim Deep and their fourth album There's A Big Star Outside, which Ryder Jones has produced, an enormous step forward for sensitive boys who still look at their carpets and trainers rather than the eyes of the girls they secretly love, even as they make their way towards their late twenties,
This is wonderful stuff and everybody concerned should be proud of themselves. Like Morrissey and Murdoch before them Swim Deep make a convincing case for staying shy. There's a classic, obssessive bent to everything about There's A Big Star Outside, tailor made for types who spend more time in their local Rough Trade or HMV than is strictly good for them. Dreamers, please form an orderly queue.
